This past week we have been discussing the effects that Tobacco, Drugs, and Alcohol have on your body and we have been exploring how these things are harmful to the human body. To further understand the effects of drugs why not try these interesting activites at home and report back to your classmates how they made you feel. These activities will enhance your ability to make connections and interpretations of the effects addictions and harmful drugs have on the human body.
“Exhale, 1–2-3”
Instructions: Run in place for 2 minutes. Check your pulse for 30 seconds. Count heartbeats and multiply by 2 to find heart rate. Repeat, but, unwrap a drinking straw and insert in mouth. You can only breathe through the straw while running in place for 2 minutes. Check your pulse to see if the heart rate has increased. Compare this to the effects of smoking on the body. Record the results and what body systems are affected by this activity.
“What Did You Say?”
Instructions: Stuff 4 large soft marshmallows to stuff into your mouth and recite a Nursery Rhyme (i.e., “Mary Had a Little Lamb”) or tongue twister (How much Wood could a Woodchuck – chuck? - 5 times) while not chewing or swallowing the marshmallows. Ask someone at home to count the words that they could understand. (Slurred Speech) (Alternative – instead of marshmallows – have them stick their tongue out while reciting it.) Also record what harmful effect on the body is related to.
